If Cryptograms brutalized the pop ideal like a guitar-wielding David Lynch, leaving the follow-up Fluorescent Grey EP an exquisite corpse, then Microcastle resurrects it, scar tissue and all. The resulting 2xCD set captures urgent and imaginative songs that reorganize 4AD haze, off-kilter indie pop, crashing garage-punk, forward-leaning krautrock, and hypnotic Kranky ambience into a singular-sounding call-to-arms.

Here, the band comes into their own by applying their own inspiringly distinctive, bleakly appealing sensibility to whatever ideas happen to move them.

Fist-pumping first single "Nothing Ever Happened" shares most of a title with a Pavement deluxe-edition bonus track while sounding a lot like Magazine's more straightforward, hard-charging side. If you play it backwards, Cole namedrops Johnny Cash. It's part of the languid song suite that ends the first side of the album's vinyl edition and breaks the disc up much the way ambient interludes divided Cryptograms.

Only this time, the lull lasts just 10 minutes, not 20, and even at its least structured it's always more accessible.

With treated mbiras, "Activa" turns the dream-pop of Cox's Atlas Sound solo work into a nightmare vision of wasted lives.

Despite an outsized and often compelling persona, Cox is in some ways absent from Microcastle. The first recognizable voice we hear belongs to guitarist Lockett Pundt, on second track "Agoraphobia"; Pundt's gentle, repetitive wordplay-- "Cover me, come for me, comfort me"-- cozies up against sunlit psych-pop OK, about wanting to be buried alive for someone else's sexual gratification.

The guitars are big, bright, and unusually unfucked-with. What else can I say that has not already been said? Perfect perfect perfect jacovars. This is a gorgeous recording , moving and genuinely spiritual. Pharaoh Sanders has such a deep reservoir of feeling to offer. Listen, loosen and float slow. Jake Bialos. Hagioscope to the Heart by Paint Thinner.

Noisy, expansive psych-punk from Detroit that explores the darker, stranger corners of a colorful trip. Rice Weird Era Cont. Alec L. Critten Captivating and dreamy sounds laced with strange and sad lyrics. While this album has quality songwriting, this album's real draw for me is its ability to create songs that incorporate experimentation and ambient soundscapes while still maintaining an addictive pop appeal in succinct form.

Purchasable with gift card. Cover Me Slowly Agoraphobia Never Stops Little Kids Tuesday, November 11, Bang! Lots of fun new released to talk about - and some shows you should check out too! The music of this five-piece electro-pop-indie-rock band from Christchurch, New Zealand grabbed my attention immediately with their shouty vocals and dance-punk synth stabs. However, if you want to catch Bang! They are only playing 2 more shows before leaving the country.

Heres the deets:. Label: Unknown Genre: Dance-Punk. First things first: there'll be no 'aarrrs' , 'm'lads' or references to wooden legs and scurvy, if you please. Well, because they've released one of the best bloody albums you'll hear all year, that's why.

Little Death is the quintet's debut full-length release. A minute-long collection of brief, guitar-based indie-punk-poplets, the Gareth Parton of Go! Team fame -produced album may sound like your average British indie at first - but go away, clean your ears out, and then come back and revel in the sheer brilliance of this record. Label: Stolen Recordings Genre: Indie. My excitement soon turned to disappointment when I realized that instead of some new studio material, it was merely a glorified mixed tape.

But as I put on my headphones and pressed play, my disappointment quickly turned to joy and I found myself lost in the musical journey that is Tapes.
